Thompson is Suffolk Matchplay Champion

Suffolk Golf Union Matchplay Championship Sat 9th & Sunday 10th July 2016

The Suffolk Matchplay Championship was played at Aldeburgh Golf Club over the weekend of the 9/10th July.

The 16 players due to take part had progressed from the Suffolk Amateur Championship held 4 weeks previously, in view of which the number of late withdrawals was particularly disappointing.

The highlight of the first round was the match between Guy Mummery (Rookery Park) and Tom Wade (Ufford Park) Tom played the opening 9 holes in 30 to take a 6 hole advantage only for Guy to shoot 31 on the back 9 and win the match on the final green. Jasper Johnson was beaten by Woodbridge colleague Philip Ashenden at the 3rd extra hole.

Round 2 saw Chris Duffy (Gorleston) defeat Jamie Jones at the 3rd extra hole with Guy Mummery and Alex Taylor both progressing following 5 & 4 wins over Jed Seeley and Philip Ashenden.. Luke Thompson (Rookery Park), who received a walk over in round 1, defeated last year's champion, Danny Western (Gorleston) 2 & 1.

In the semi-finals Duffy beat Mummery 6 & 5 whilst Thompson achieved a 2 & 1 win over Taylor.

The final was extremely close with Duffy holding a one hole lead at the turn. However, Thompson then won 3 holes in a row and although Duffy managed to win the 17th to take the match down the final hole he was unable to force extra holes.
