Suffolk Golf Union Tolly Cobbold Cup Final Rookery Park v Felixstowe Ferry Sunday 28th Aug 2016
Bank Holiday Sunday saw Rookery Park Tolly Team victorious in winning the Tolly Cobbold Cup for the first time as Rookery Park G.C. The last time the club won the trophy was in 1974 but as Lowestoft Golf Club not as Rookery Park.
The match was against Felixstowe Ferry G.C and held on a neutral course at Stowmarket G.C. It was an exciting contest with Felixstowe taking a lead in most matches over the early holes after the first 9 holes Rookery were down in 2 matches and square in the other 2. The first Rookery pair of James Hogg and Scott Coleman turned their game around from being 2 down to finish the morning session 1 up. The following pair of Steve Morris and Kevin Fitzgerald were not quite so successful unable to find their true form and finishing the morning session 4 down. Conal Downing and Kevin Titchiner battled back from 2 down with 2 to play to finish all square as did the final pair of James Nolloth and Ian Foxton. This left the match on a knife edge at lunch with Rookery 3 down.
Captain Allan Holmes and Vice-Captain John Marjoram had discussions both between themselves and with the team members regarding any possible changes that could be made to order or substitutes. They considered swapping the first 2 pairs around but in the end it was decided to leave the team as it is and field the same team and order. Felixstowe however changed their first 2 pairs around and therefore the decision was made for them. As the afternoon session progressed Rookery first pair James Hogg & Scott Coleman forged ahead playing some very good golf they were 3 up at 9 and although losing a couple of holes in the back 9 holes pressed on to finish 5 up. Their efforts alone had wiped out the lunch time deficit and put Rookery back in the driving seat. Second pair of Steve Morris and Kevin Fitzgerald were still struggling to find their true form and were 3 down with 3 to play. The pair kept to the task and made a sterling effort over the closing holes winning all 3 to bring their match back to all square. After 2 pairs had finished Rookery found themselves leaders in the Club House with 2 matches to come. At this time the heavens opened and the players had to battle heavy rain, the Third pair of Conal Downing and Kevin Titchiner were 1 up with 3 to play. On the 15th green Kevin Titchiner holed a great putt for a half to remain 1 up after it looked as though the pair may lose the hole. On the 17 another good putt saw them go 2 up and with a birdie to finish on the last hole the pair finished 3 up for the afternoon. Rookery’s fourth pair of James Nolloth and Ian Foxton knew that the match was very close and for a long while it had looked like a playoff may be required. In their early holes the pair were unable to hold the Felixstowe pair and found themselves 4 down after 4. Unfazed by this start the pair knuckled down and by the 9th hole they had reduced the deficit to 1 down. They continued to press and by the 12th hole they had the advantage leading 1up. The next few holes were very close but the pair managed to hold on to their lead finishing 1 up and giving Rookery Park the victory 6 up.
This was the second consecutive year that Rookery Park had managed reached the final of this County Competition and after losing 3 down last year it was with great pleasure, relief and pride in the team that Captain Allan Holmes was able to lift the Trophy for the first time as Rookery Park G C This year a number of players have played their part for the team in reaching the final. The second round match saw 5 new players introduced due to absences but they went on to secure victory and allow the team to progress to the final. Allan & John would like to pay tribute to all the players who have both played and who showed interest in being part of this campaign.
