Club Championship & Millennium Bowl Sunday 25th June
With conditions just about perfect for 36 holes of golf, 49 players did battle in the Rookery Park Golf Club Club Championship on Sunday. The morning 18 showed that honesty and integrity are golfs defining qualities, as Luke Thompson (one of the favourites) called a penalty on himself after discovering he had 15 clubs in his bag. Luke put the 2 stroke penalty behind him to record a gross 75 and trail Calvin Sherwood by 3 shots and Graeme Brown by 1 shot. The afternoon round was basically a shoot out between Luke and Calvin, as Graeme could not maintain his form in a round of 80. Calvin gained the initiative with a birdie at the 1st in the afternoon to stretch his lead to 4 however a tiple bogey 7 on the 6th for Calvin reduced the deficit to 1. Luke birdied the par 5 7th to draw level showing all his renouned fighting spirit. A par for Calvin on the 8th to Luke's bogey saw Calvin take a one shot lead going into the back 9. Calvin then showed the form of the previous day's Stenson team victory, with three birdies on the spin (10, 11, & 12) to put the contest beyong Luke. 2 late bogies on 13 and 18 did not prevent Calvin from lifting the Club Championship Trophy with a score of 145 to Luke's 148. Graeme Brown held on for third with a score of 154.
In the Millennium Bowl (Handicap), Andy Hetherington produced the round of his life in the morning to come in with a stunning nett 64, to lead Graeme Brown by 5 shots. Kevin Fitzgerald was handily placed after his nett 70. In the afternoon, Andy managed to keep his composure to record a nett 74 in the afternoon, to give him a 2 shot victory (nett 138) over Kevin who matched his morning nett 70 in the afternoon. Third place in the Millennium Bowl went to Ian Foxton, with 2 rounds of nett 71.
A big thank you to John Pawsey and Jim Braniff for acting as starters, and to Mick Varley for his help in running the scoring desk.
